GeoCaching

What is geocaching? A new hobby for our family, a way to get outside more often and just see different areas. According to the official website, "Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment." The locations of the geocaches are online. You download the coordinates to your GPS hand held and then off you go! When you find one, you log your geocaching username on the log book in the cache and then also online.

We are really enjoying it. I first learned about a similar activity called letterboxing in a Family Fun magazine about 3 or 4 years ago. Then we went to NC in 2007 to visit my brother and his family. While we were there, we found a few geocaches. The kids loved it. I've wanted to do more here, but hadn't invested in a handheld GPS until just before Spring break. While we were in Arizona we found several geocaches, but since then, we've gone out several times in the area. There are TONS of geocaches within just 10 miles of us. We're not even remotely close to reaching all of them yet and a few new ones were posted in the last few weeks! Yippee! Here's to more geocaches! We especially like the medium to large sized caches. They are fun to find and the kids love taking a toy or trinket out and placing one from our bag in the box. Here are some pictures of one of our outings locally. To those who live near us ... you might recognize a few of these spots. Please don't ever disturb a geocache. Place it back where it was and try to prevent "muggles" from seeing you hunting!

Anybody else out there a geocacher? Our username to www.geocaching.com is lindseycrew. Tell us your username too!
